Key Background:

Intel’s entrance into the market of AI chips has been marred by a series of mishaps, most notably through acquisitions. Intel used the years between 2016 and 2019 to purchase AI startups Movidius, Mobileye, Nervana, and Habana Labs with the goal of making strides into AI. These acquisitions failed to yield as hoped, and Intel’s global AI strategy was kept in silos. Typical of this is Intel’s Gaudi accelerator chip, which while originally touted to great fanfare failed to meet Intel’s initial sales expectations, and in the end affected Intel’s revenue forecast.

These are a sequence of challenges that created a sequence of leadership in 2025 when Lip-Bu Tan became CEO. Tan has gone deeper inwardly, moving away from acquisitions to focus on making the most out of what they already have in a bid to satisfy the needs of the emerging AI market. Intel wishes to compete head-to-head with Nvidia’s products combined, which have performed well in areas such as AI and machine learning. Instead of relying on external acquisition, Tan will leverage Intel’s existing product lines, such as its server processors, and modify them for AI applications like robotics and driverless cars.

Tan’s plan also includes reorganizing the leadership of Intel towards more innovation. The core businesses like data center and AI chips are now directly under his control. A new position of Chief Technology and AI Officer has been established, and Sachin Katti will lead Intel’s AI strategy. The restructuring is to reduce bureaucracy within and to speed up the company in AI, as Intel gets ready to challenge Nvidia’s dominance in the market.

Despite all that, Intel is intensely battling it out with Nvidia, which has made a forceful assertion of itself in the field of AI chips, and other tech giants like Amazon and Google jumping into the battle for AI. Intel’s turn to indigenous innovation has been seen as a breakthrough to become a serious contender in the rapidly changing market of AI chips.
