Key Background:

Google has launched new AI-based trip planning features in Search, Maps, and Gemini to make planning trips simpler and more personalized. The changes will make planning and organizing holidays easier for users, with next-generation AI functionality for convenience.

On Google Search, the AI Overviews feature is enhanced to provide personalized travel itineraries. It lets users enter something like “build a 5-day Japan tour with cultural activities” and it generates a whole schedule with suggestions, analysis, and interactive maps. The itinerary can be saved in Google Maps or annotated to Google Docs or Gmail and forwarded easily. It already supports English searches in the United States both on desktop and mobile.

Google Maps launches a new screenshot recognition feature, fixing the world’s problem of disparate travel inspiration. When users capture screenshots of places, Maps can now recognize these places, enabling users to save and organize them in one easy place. Saved places are then plotted, enabling travelers to have an organized map of where they’re headed. The feature is initially launched in English for iOS users in the United States with an Android launch to soon follow.

In addition, Google also rolled out its price-tracking feature to hotels. With this, one can monitor hotel price reductions and receive a notification of the best deal for their holiday. By geographically constraining the search with a star rating filter and distance from tourist destinations, one can narrow down the search and receive an e-mail alert of a better deal. The feature is being rolled out globally on desktop and mobile sites.

Through these AI-imposed improvements, Google keeps simplifying travel planning and personalizing it. The shift of the company to integrate AI in core services is to improve user experiences on different platforms.
