Sir Demis Hassabis, CEO of DeepMind and Nobel laureate, sees a future where artificial intelligence transforms healthcare by curing all human diseases in ten years. In a recent CBS interview, he stressed that the traditional drug development process—typically taking ten years and billions of dollars—could be significantly shortened by AI, perhaps to weeks. 

One of the biggest advances in this quest came in the form of AlphaFold, DeepMind’s revolutionary AI program that had correctly predicted more than 200 million protein structures. This feat radically sped up biology and medicine research, from a process that used to take years per protein to one which can now be undertaken at scale. With these insights, scientists have been given useful tools to create novel treatments for a host of diseases, ranging from cancer and genetic diseases. 

Hassabis predicts the coming of artificial general intelligence (AGI), when AI systems will not only solve but also detect issues—creating their own scientific hypotheses.
