1. Kingdom Hearts 4 Takes Center Stage
Fans of the long-running Kingdom Hearts franchise received a major update as Disney and Square Enix presented new footage from Kingdom Hearts 4 at a major Disney fan convention in Anaheim.
The preview comes as the franchise approaches its 25th anniversary. The series first launched in 2002 and has since developed into one of Disney’s most successful video game properties.
The new installment will continue the story of Sora, the franchise’s central protagonist. Following the events of Kingdom Hearts 3, Sora finds himself trapped in Quadratum, a fictional world inspired by Tokyo’s Shibuya district.
The game is scheduled for release in 2027, giving fans their first extended look at the direction of the next major chapter.
2. New Coco World Expands the Disney Connection
A four-minute trailer shown during the presentation introduced a new world inspired by Pixar’s Coco.
The setting expands on the earlier footage shown during the event and demonstrates how the world of the animated film will connect with the gameplay and broader story of Kingdom Hearts 4.
The Coco world brings players into a setting inspired by the film’s Land of the Dead, where visual design, characters and gameplay mechanics can be integrated into the larger Kingdom Hearts experience.
The presentation also featured familiar characters including Donald Duck, Goofy, King Mickey and Hades, alongside original Kingdom Hearts characters.
The franchise has traditionally combined Disney properties with characters and elements from Square Enix’s Final Fantasy universe. The addition of Pixar worlds continues to expand that formula.
3. Paper Mickey Introduces a Different Gameplay Style
The presentation also revealed a new Paper Mickey Mouse world that introduces an unusual visual style and new gameplay possibilities.
Mickey becomes a playable character within a storybook-inspired environment. Players will be able to travel through cracks in walls, transform into an airplane and solve puzzles within the new setting.
The mechanics represent a departure from the series’ traditional adventure format and show how the developers are experimenting with different styles for individual worlds.
The developers also revealed that Maleficent, the iconic villain from Sleeping Beauty, will have a significant role in the upcoming game.
4. Tetsuya Nomura Returns With a Broader Vision
Tetsuya Nomura, creator of the Kingdom Hearts franchise, made a surprise appearance during the presentation.
Nomura discussed the importance of selecting Disney properties that can create meaningful connections between their worlds and gameplay mechanics.
The approach reflects one of the defining characteristics of the series. Rather than simply placing familiar Disney characters into a conventional role-playing game, Kingdom Hearts has consistently attempted to build gameplay and storytelling around the identity of each featured world.
The new Coco setting and Paper Mickey concept demonstrate that strategy through different visual styles and gameplay systems.
5. Kingdom Hearts Expands Beyond Video Games
The Kingdom Hearts franchise is also moving into animation.
An original Kingdom Hearts anime series is in development for Disney Channel and Disney+. The project will feature an original story, and Nomura is heavily involved in its development.
The expansion comes as the franchise reaches a significant commercial milestone. Kingdom Hearts has become one of Disney’s video game properties to surpass $1 billion in retail sales, highlighting the strength of the franchise more than two decades after its debut.
The combination of a new mainline game and an upcoming animated series gives Disney and Square Enix opportunities to introduce Kingdom Hearts to both longtime fans and a new generation of audiences.
With its 2027 release approaching, Kingdom Hearts 4 is set to continue the franchise’s distinctive blend of Disney storytelling, Square Enix characters, original mythology and action role-playing gameplay. The latest preview suggests that the next chapter will expand that formula with new worlds, characters and mechanics while maintaining the elements that have defined the series since 2002.
