Background
Design platform Canva has launched its own artificial intelligence (AI) design model that understands layers and formats, allowing users to create editable designs. The company announced several new AI-powered features and products on Thursday to make the creative process simpler and more connected.
Canva’s new foundational design model is trained on its own design elements. It can generate visuals across formats such as social media posts, presentations, websites, and whiteboards. The company said this model gives users more flexibility to edit designs directly, reducing the need for multiple prompts.
Robert Kawalsky, Canva’s Global Head of Product, said the goal is to let users start with a simple text prompt and then refine designs easily through hands-on editing.
Canva has also upgraded its AI assistant, Canva AI, which now appears throughout the platform. Users can tag the assistant in comments to get suggestions for text, visuals, or layout ideas. The tool can also create 3D objects and copy the art style of any design.
The company has connected its spreadsheet tool with the app-building feature, so users can turn data into interactive widgets for dashboards or visual presentations. Canva has launched Canva Grow, an AI marketing tool that lets users create ads, track their results, and post campaigns directly on platforms like Meta.
Other additions include form creation tools, email design templates, and tighter integration with the Affinity design suite. Canva announced that Affinity will now be free forever and that its tools are being merged with Canva’s interface for a smoother creative experience.
